I dislike it too. While there is a certain amount of sense in making "Werner" a real greenhorn, so that things can be explained to him and thus to the audience, they overdid it here and there.
While I like the romantic subplot of Ullman and Francoise (sorry, using a computer without foreign-language keys)I didn't like the actress who played Francoise. She looked too old and her crying was fakey. It's funny, in the snapshot she looks very young and cute, but in the actual film (only in the TV version) she's all wrong.
