The wording used on a U-boat to order maneuvers like diving and surfacing is very strict - even to this day. Only standard verbiage and nomenclature was used. Anblasen is an actual term used to order blowing. It is found in the Diving Manual which you can read here The word Ausblasen = to blow would be used to discuss blowing in a general way but would not be used by the Chief Engineer or Ko

Hi, in the type IXC there was no red lighting. Quoting the US Navy Evaluation found here "Low level illumination for dark adaptation is not provided. Control instruments have been treated with relatively long persistence phosphorescent material." I believe that the type VII was the same. In type VII Manual found here it says "The night lighting is powered from light groups an

Hi Andrey, the Black Sea U-boats used standard Kriegsmarine grid squares in their KTBs. The "Norm" in the message means standard squares. The grid squares in radio messages to U-boats were usually disguised. The system for disguising the squares in the Black Sea was different than in the Atlantic. In the Atlantic only the letters and the first two digits were disguised. In this mes

The eyepiece of the periscope in the conning tower (the attack periscope) was fixed in height, while the extendable part of the periscope tube moved up and down out of the boat. The periscope was turned by a hydraulic system using foot pedals while the operator sat on a seat. The eyepiece scope in the control room (air search periscope) moved up and down as the scope was raised and lowered out o

Hi danmac, I can say with near certainty that the attack on a lighthouse did not take place. 1st I have translated almost all of the KTBs for boats that operated off the Canadian coast and there is no such attack mentioned. 2nd U-boats did not attack navigation aids because they found then useful for their own navigation. 3rd Attacks on targets ashore would not have been done without specific

Up to now I have worked exclusively with WWII records, mostly translating WWII U-boat KTBs. I have just begun to translate my fist WWI U-boat war diaries, for example: I usually include sun and moon data for the diaries I translate but I am unsure of the timezone that the diary is kept in. WWII U-boat war diaries were kept in German Legal time. Switchover dates for daylight savings time are kn

I highly recommend these books. Each book tells the story chronologically from the point of view of a particular French U-boat base. The numerous photos, many of which are from the Deutsches U-Boot Museum and Luc's own extensive collection, are wonderful and make the books a great value.

Hello all, I am working on a project to translate the KTBs of boats that deployed to the US East Coast. I am missing the KTB of U-135 for the boat's 3rd patrol from 26 Aprl to 5 July 1942. This KTB is found on NARA T1022 Roll 2835. I have other KTBs from the roll but this one is missing from the set available to me. If you can help me please contact me at jerry&#

Hello all, I am currently translating the KTB for U-109's 5th patrol from 25 March - 3 June 1942. The copy of the KTB I am working with is missing page 27 which covers the period 4 May 00.00 to 5 May 08.00. If any has a copy of the KTB with the missing page please get in touch with me by PM or at s3bpilot@shaw.ca. Reg

29. NAG
Hello all, I am translating a KTB and ran across the term NAG which I presume is an abreviation for "Netz- und Anpassungsgerät". One of these was transferred from a supply boat (U-461) to a type VIIC (U-707) on 10 May 1943. Presumably this is a power supply and/or adapter for radio gear. Does anyone know what this device is and what it was used for? Thanks, Jerry

30. Re: U30
John, I should add that the boat sailed with 6 torpedoes and shot one stern torpedo at a tanker on 25 December at 0800 which missed, exploding at the end of the run, leaving 5 in the tubes at the time of the attack on the battleship formation. Jerry
