Danke Oliver So this seems to confirm that España wasn't sunk by U 139. But how could she have come to the knowledge of Fechter ? Would it be possible then that this sailing vessel was just damaged or even freed after examination ? Best regards Yves

Michael, For sure, this is a questionning information. How Fechter who was on board U139 at the time did add that one ? Best regards Yves

Joe, Michael As we know, U 139's KTB did not survive the war. However part of it has been more or less reconstituted by LI H.Fechter after the war. I have a copy of a "Wegekarte" he drew and it appears clearly on it that España (said to be of 300 grt) was the first ship to be sunk during that patrol. Best regards Yves

Michael(s), Joe Per U 46 KTB, Hillebrand ws in charge of the boat until the last day of November 1916 (signed by him). After Dec. 1st, it is signed by Saalwächter until Jan.15 then Hillebrand from Jan.16. I suppose that more likely, Hillebrandt went on leave from Dec.1st to Jan.15th though an illness period can't be ruled out. Regards Yves

Simon, Joe Per U 46 KTB, schooner Ladas was not damaged. She was halted by signals, searched and freed although carrying contraband (pit props for Cardiff) only due to the fact that the danish captain had on board his wife and a child and Saalwächter did not want they should be in peril of the sea somme 100 miles away from shore. Best regards Yves

Seemingly it happened a bug in the run when dbase was built. On his individual file Saalwächter is correctly reported to have been in command of U46 for that period but in the dbase, it appears to have been Hillebrandt. I have corrected this patrol of U46. Regards Yves

This story is briefly accounted in Bendert (Die UB Boote der Kaiserlichen Marine) but not a word about in Spindler (Der Handelskrieg mit U-Booten), what is rather surprising. Best regards Yves

Though most ships were sunk by shelling or scuttling, there is quite a number of ships sunk by a torpedo shot. In fact, there is quite none patrol he did not fire at least one torpedo. Regards Yves

Simon, Michael, Seemingly, per Spindler vol. V p.208-209 the last three war patrols of U 73 were operated under command of KL Meusel from 10.6.1918 until 25.8.1918 Per the website dbase we have : Meusel, Karl U-73 16/01/1918 15/06/1918 Bünte, Carl (i.V.) U-73 16/06/1918 14/07/1918 Saupe, Fritz U-73 15/07/1918 30/10/1918 Carl Bünte seems to have been in charge only as deputize commander

Joe, Discovered the same problem for all the year 1918 concerning U 33 The ship files have been corrected and the bug does not appear any longer. However it still remains on the officers files for Sieß and von Doemming about the period they were in command of the respective boats. The cause is probably a typo in the original database of commanders and it will be fixed soon. Thanks for hunting

Sorry for the mess I am making tonight. Definitely Tangistan is credited to U 12 by Spindler in his vol.2. Tangistan was the last ship hit by this submarine who was sunk the following day. U 12 had fired a torpedo at a british cruiser, the torpedo missed but struck Tangistan who was steaming close to the cruiser. Yves
