Just a little typo first. Read AMBC not AMBB. This acronym stands for "Armement Militaire des Bâtiments de Commerce" otherwise, Military armament of merchant ships, i.e. the naval staff who were dispatched on board the steamers to serve the guns. This has nothing to see with the ship's name. It was the name of a special section of staff. Hoping that clears the question. Best

Joe I have those books (2 vol.) and I am also a friend of the author a french naval Officer. If I can help you with a few excerpts, I'll do. Just call on PM. I do have also the list of most of the ships involved with U-Boats in WW1 as well as their index reference in the french SHD files at Vincennes Regards Yves

Jo, Well, I don't know how this discrepancy happened. If you check Thomas Bieber file, you won't see he commanded U 90 as well as if you check U 90 you will find that at the time she sank Victor de Chavarri, she was under command of W.Remy. Thank you for pointing that, it will be corrected soon. Regards Yves

Joe Thank you for pointing that typo. You are right, Gansser commanded U 156 until June 1918. It will be corrected soon in the base. The second cruise lasted from 14.Nov.1917 to 11 Mar 1918, an exceptionally long patrol in the Atlantic. Best regards Yves

Ufo It is not a silly question and this account reminded me a story I had read somewhere. And I found it (at least one of them if several landfall occured). F.T Arnold Fischdick was on board U 90 and after the war he published his story. On one occasion, he describes a landfall on Rona by 2 crews (Lt z.S. Weidemann and obermaat Ahrend) on board the dinghy and they came back with bird eggs an

Jerry, Sorry, there was no U-Boat captain in WW1 with this name. The only closer match I can find in Ehrenrangliste is Ernst Friedrich Lüder born 27.9.1891, who was Marine-Ingenieur Aspiranten on board UC 3. He died when the boat was lost 26.5.1916. No other match. If W.J. Luders served on U-Boats, he was not an officer anyway. Best regards Yves

Daniel California and Vedamore are both recorded at Vincennes and probably the files contain at least the questionnaire of 50 questions which was filled by the Allied every time there was an investigation on a submarine attack. The same file is probably also held at Kew. Per SHD Vincennes classification, they are recorded in section SS G California 26-3280 Vedamore 27-3288 Best regards Yves

Daniel Do you have more details about ships and dates ? In such case, I could check if any archive at french Hist. Dept. at Vincennes which holds with Kew quite a lot of files involving U-Boats. Best regards Yves

William, This is a very difficult task now but easier for officers though. Happily for her crew, this boat survived the war, and there is not even the possibility of checking through the casulaty list. Maybe someone else has an idea on the question but so far on my side I could never issue a full crew list especially at a specific date. Regards Yves

Mike, There is none as far as I know moreover in wgs84. The grid system also changed during the war. Unless having a chart itself it is very difficult to convert a grid position into coordinates. Regards Yves

Dear Klerki Well, in my files, Salaminia is not clearly reported by either Spindler or Bendert to have been sunk by UB 64. Though, per Miramar website, she was sunk by torpedo on 29 March at 53.27N 05.32W without indication of attacking U-Boot. However in other non quoted sources, she is credited to UB 64 On my side I don't have the KTB for UB 64 on that date to confirm. Somebody here migh
