Hello Rodney, ahh, HEALDTON, o. k. Well... Patrols off Terschelling = VIII. and IX. Flotilla (Yarmouth, Harwich). Hi R. which theater of operation you are looking for? North Sea (German Bight, Skagerrak, Kattegat, Norway, Shetlands), Channel, Irish Sea, Mediterranean, Baltic, White Sea ??? I can give you some file-numbers from TNA to look at if I know more. Logbooks (ADM 173/...) are only usefull if you know which submarine you are searching for :-) Oliver

Hi Ron, the first description is the right one, BALFOUR was hit by NIDD (see file ADM 137-3458 at TNA). The U-Boat involved was UB 74 which didn't return, but incident was cofirmed by her logbook which was recovered by divers and survived at TNA (see file ADM 137-3900). UB 74 suffered only minor damage. Oliver

Hi Rodney, informations re. minelaying in the German Bight by surface ships might also be held at the National Archives at Kew, London: ADM 137 - 3906 Details of minelaying in German Bight 1917 - 1918 see also link here: I had seen this documents years ago and it was "not usefull" for me, but at that time I was searching for informations on british SUBMARINE minelaying!

Michael, as we have seen recently there are an couple of attacks against Sailing Vessels from U-class U-Boats which are not reported by Spindler. It might also have been an U x on passage through the Channel and so UB 39 could well be mined while outbound. Oliver

We should take UB 39 as an probable candidate, unfortunately she didn't return. She left Zeebrugge on 23.04. early, could have been South of Portland next day... Oliver

Hi Michael, I agree with Simon. Are you able to confirm via KTB, that UC 47 on 23.04.1917 also damaged british S/S NEPHRITE, which was in the same general area as TOMMI ? Oliver

Hello, a friend of mine got an offer for an "Nachlass" of an Obermaschinist from U 105 who got the "Deutsches Kreuz in Gold" for saving the boat while diving. Anyone knows the name of that man ? Oliver Lörscher

Hello Csaba, I'm sure you mean Warship International No. 1, 1989 (pages 10 to 29) "Five broken down B-boats, british submarine operations in the Northern Adriatic 1915 - 1917" by Paul Kemp and Peter Jung It's very well researched and also gives you some TNA-references, also covers the operations of the H-class in Venice ! What do you want do know ? Oliver

Hi all, I'm sorry for my ignorance, I forgot that UB 38 didn't claimed the sinking :-( It's an similar case like UC 47 / FLEURETTE above, with FLEURETTE also not included in UC 47's official sinking list from 1917 ! Oliver

Hallo Simon information I have is: french fishing vessel PELLEVIN (Cpt. Larganet), 31 NRT, was sunk with bombs 21 miles SW of Lizard Hd. (49°37'N-05°16'W), 6 crew rescued. I'm not sure if it was UB 38 or UC 26 perhaps ? Do you have location for UB 38's attack? Oliver

As for ST. ANTOINE DE PADOUE: maybe UB 18 is an possibility, but she didn't return and so we will never knew for sure. Appart from this the place of attack was NORTH of the Scillies, I'm not sure if UBII type submarines operated in that area at the end of 1917 if ordered to patrol the western entrance of the Channel ? As for REINE D'ARVOR: in my U 89-file I have an entry that

If 13.02.1917, what's with U 83 which was lost in February 1917 with operational area Western entrance of Channel ? Oliver

Hi all, acutally no R-class sub ever fired an torpedo in anger. Just an handful of them saw patrol-service at the end of WW 1 and only R 7 was able to made contact on an german U-boat ! This happend on the morning of 11.10.1918 to the west of the Isle of Man. R 7 (Lt. Anthony B. Lockart) was only able to close within 2500 y until the U-boat changed course from South to West and was lo

Hm, that makes sense! Lloyds reported her as damaged per 4th of December, but only reached Fécamp on the 09th. This case is easy to solve - one had to look at file ADM 137 / 4006 - merchant vessels attacked home waters 01. - 15.12.1917 at Kew to confirm the date as being the 8th of December and position...
