No Joe, UB 104 was already back at Zeebrugge on 17.08.1918 ! Sadly I was just able to see a small number of Flanders U-Boot KTB's right now, so limited to look at the information given by Spindler I can't find any U-Boot which would be a prime candidate :-o To make it short: I have no idea ? Oliver

Ah, sorry Joe, I should have made clear that this information is from UB 112's KTB, not from Spindler. This in fact was the first torpedo fired by UB 112 on this patrol and she didn't fire another until the 22nd (PRUNELLE) and 23rd (HEROS) etc. Also the attribution UB 112 = THE STEWART'S COURT is correct as Kptlt. Rhein states the place of attack being 1,5 miles South-East of

UB 104 wasn't at sea and UB 112 sank the S.S. THE STEWART's COURT that day, but that was off Seaham and she didn't fire another torpedo. At the moment I'm not sure which german Submarine should have fired this ominous torpedo on 21.08.1918... Oliver

ANNA I is listed in Lloyd's War Losses as being sunk "around" 11.11.1916 in the White Sea, but so far I was not able to find anything on that subject in the british files. You can keep this case in mind, but with at least ?????? question-marks :-) Oliver

Hi, actually she did lay her 36 mines: on 04.08.1916 between 12.00h-16.10h from South of Orlov LT to South of Mys Gorodetskij from 67°24'N-41°10'E to 67°48'N-41°30'E dispensed around fairway buoys and approach buoys over an area of 18 miles !!! So I would say: YES :-) Oliver

Hi Colin, if you have access to the National Archives files, you should see these ones: ADM 1/8449/43 Loss of HMS PRIMULA in Eastern Mediterranean 1st March 1916. List of casualties ADM 1/8450/55 Loss of HMS Primula, Court of Inquiry ADM 137/3152 Loss of HMS Primula The later two most probably copies of each other. The submarine involved was the U 35. Information on that U-Bo

Hi Ron, this boat was U 95 (Kptlt. Athalwin Prinz) At 17:15h they sighted D 7's periscope 80 metres away in square 156 beta 4 and fired the gun at the periscope. They reported 3 torpedoes missing the boat. D 7 in fact fired one torpedo and missed. Oliver

Hi Pam, just by chance I have the complete wording of UB 119's order. Reason: One of the crew, U-Maschinisten-Anwärter Etteldorf, was from the suburb I'm living and the chronicler for my suburb contacted me as he found out (by chance of course) that I'm researching WW I submarine operations ! Peter Friedrich Etteldorf was born on 29.06.1900 in Euren near Trier. On 01.10.

Got it, it was light-cruiser USS "Chester" (CL-1), which was on her way to Plymouth after leaving convoy H.G. 102. Reported position was 49°12'N-05°37'W which is about 48 miles SSW of Lizard Head, time of first sighting was 01:04 a.m. G.M.T. U 53's time and position for torpedo-attack: 03:09h in square 2534 O which is about 39 miles SSW of Lizard Head. "

Hi Simon, UB 65 was not responsible, no attack those days... The "Interrogation of survivors from UB 72" is in TNA-file ADM 137/3060, it's enough to give here the "preliminary note" from this file: * * * "By a curious coincidence, the only three survivors of U.B. 72 were all making their first cruise in a submarine on active service. They had evidently be

Well, we might took into consideration that UB 72 was in that area and was lost on 12.05.1918 in the Channel by torpedoes fired by the british sub D 4. That she's responsible I nethertheless find not very likely because there were 3 survivors from UB 72's sinking and they gave no information in that regard during interrogation. On the other hand, their information was not very

Hi Simon, you can add that the destroyer was steering North ( 0° ), U 53 dived and heard an hit after 20 seconds, afterwards sinking noises and an large explosion, maybe depth-charges... I have no clue for this attack, I'm sure it failed but it must be recorded on the allied side. Oliver

I have PROTECT as an probable with at least 3 question-marks ??? for UC 16's barrier from 26.02.1917 off Folkestone but don't know where buoy 6D was, also PROTECT had the mine in her nets, so she could have been disposed from an other location and that will made this incident an difficult one. Hallo Simon ! it was UB 87 (Kptlt. Petri) on 14.05.1918 which wasn't aware of the collision. D 7 at 12.50h sighted an german submarine steering south-east in pos. 55°33‘N-08°15‘W, 2,5 miles away and at 13.28h started her approach, at 13.33h while at 22 ft. she was run over by UB 87 and both periscopes were bend, D 7 dived to 50 ft. At 14.30h D 7 surfaced and sighted UB 87 one

I tend to think that it's more likely that UB 32 misidentified her target, if TOWHEE crossed the track of the torpedo the inital target of UB 32 should have noticed the sinking. As I said, there's the possibility that this "convoy" was a little bit spread over an lager area. Oliver

Hi all, at the british Archives you can find some W/T-messages from german U-Boats decrypted by the British, including the following one from U 139: 29.10.1918 to "Rugia" „2o25 - 2145 - 22o5 - 1226 Dora, 48, 49, 5o, verstanden. 7ooo Tonnen, 4 Fahrzeuge. Voraussichtlich o5.11. Vormittag 1226 Dora.“ = reporting 4 vessels with 7000 tons sunk Oliver
