Sorry bad English! Two Enigmas onboard a U-boot were not unusual. If there had been three, then THAT would have been a mystery!! Max

There are plans to carry on with the restoration on the exposed upper hull (under the deck) and fit authentic timber decking. Unfortunatly costs and time constraints prevented this happening before the opening. The inside of the boat will be an ongoing task, but as you say she will never look like the 505. Two Enigmas onboad a U-boot were not unusal. If there was three, then THAT would be a

Thank you Noel There is absolutely no reason to think that MT will turn their back on the U-534. They have come too far and and are far too committed in her preservation for that to happen. The cost of the project is estimated at £2.5m, which is no small chunk of change! If she was going to be placed on another scrap of land and left to slowly rot (as she had been previously), then my opin

I do not wish to be too critical here, but do you not think this is all a little late in the day? The U-534's future was in question three or four years ago. In fact two years ago, she was about to be cut up for scrap. There are a lot of politics involved in this, that I will not go into, but long story short, Merseytravel stepped in and Saved the U-534! If is was not for MT stepping

Hi all Whether it was right to raise her or not, the fact remains that she is still with us to this date. If the new owners had not stepped in when they did, then there would be absolutely nothing left for anyone to look at anymore and that would have been a tragedy. She would have been cut up into a lot more than her five sections! Turning to the Government for help was never really an

Hi RC If you check out my gallery of the U-534 ( click on U-534 link), there are some shots that show the thickness of the walls. I know that it is a Type IX and not VII, but it will give you some indication. Cheers Max

Hi Terry et al That's great news regarding the funding and I'm sure that it will be used very wisely. You wouldn't believe some of the costs of the project. Just the steelwork alone for the supports, run into the tens of thousands! The second cut was completed last Friday and they should be almost set up for the third. There will be one more after this one, which will mor

Unfortunately my visit has been postponed until the beginning of next week. I will update as soon as I can. The first cut has been completed (through the Aft section) and I am told that it is an absolulely perfect precission cut. Each cut will take approximately 3 - 4 days and the setting up of the equipment for each cut will also take 1 or 2 days. There are two more to go. Here is a lin

Hi Chaps I've kindly been invited down tomorrow to watch some of the cutting process. Indeed it is very sad, but at least she's not going to be hacked up into tiny bite- sized pieces and being sold for scrap! I have some pics of her in primer/base paint and I'll hopefully be able to take a few shots tomorrow. When I do I'll load them on to my Photobucket account and I&

Hi All! Currently you can't visit the U-534. You can drive past of course, but you will only be able to see her from the roadside. I was privileged to have a last tour on her a month ago. Yes it is a shame that she will be cut up, but there are no real alteratives. She has been granted a further 15+ years of life and she could always be stitched back together at a later date. Hopeful

Hi Terry Absolutely! One of the things that I've ascertained from my meetings and discussions with Merseytravel and their representatives, is that the are not doing anything by halves! They are very professional people and are taking this project very seriously. Marine engineers have studied both the plans and the U-534, and she will only be cut at non-critical points which will help

Hi Guys! As you can see on my site the plans are now underway to move the U-534 to her new location. Unfortunately the petition that I started came a little too late, as plans were already set in concrete as to what was going to happen. I wrote a little about this on the U-534 page. Yes she is to be cut into four which is a real shame, but on a lighter note she still does have some

Hi All In the Gallery Section, Gregor has posted some fantastic photos of the U-2540. On the 6th photo there is a large radio device (one on top of the other). Does anyone know if this is an authentic WW2 issued piece, or is it perhaps a Post War model? As the U-2540 served with the Bundesmarine Post War, it would make sense that some of the equipment still on board was Post War. I'

Hi Thanks for your reply.. On the U-534 page of the site www.atlantik-pirat.com there are a couple of links to press. One is the No 10 petition for UK residents, but there is a Global one next to it that anyone can sign up to. Thank you kindly for your support Max www.atantik-pirat.com

Hi MPC I was thinking the exact same thing today.. I was looking at the UK No 10 site and was thinking "surely not just 35+ people are interested in saving the U-534!"). I have posted the appeal on four other Military forums and have another couple to post a thread on. I have emailed a couple of places on your list, but I think I need to recontact them (if anyone else would like

Thank you all for your continued support.. Paul, I'm affraid that it is too late! The museum closed around 18 months ago. There hasn't been a U-534 tour since then. If we can prevent this dissection, then perhaps future visits would be a possibility again.. Cheers Max www.atlantik-pirat.com

Thanks MPC Is it the link on my original post that you can't click on? Are you in the UK or elsewhere? The No 10 site states that only UK residents can sign, so I'm not too sure what would happen if someone from the outside tries. If you have the time I would be most grateful if you could try other other link: Thank you again All the best Max

Hi All I posted a thread a week or so ago, regarding the bbc report that stated the U-534 has possibly found a new home. If you have followed the story of the U-534, you will be aware that its future has had a black cloud looming over it for over twelve months. Finally, we heard the news that she will have a new home (although this has been contridicted by a freind of mine who has heard
