Has anyone seen the trailer for the upcoming 'Hollywood' film called Greyhound? The trailer states it's "inspired by actual events." In other words, it's a complete work of fiction. There were so many ridiculous scenes in the short preview that the film should be considered a comedy. The conning tower emblems alone are an absolute embarrassment: Massive, oversi

It's incredible how many U-boot clocks there seem to be floating around (pardon the pun). There was recently one being auctioned on eBay; the problem was that it wasn't a U-boot clock but a engine room clock probably taken from a Kriegsmarine destroyer. Compounding the problem with some these claimed U-boot clocks is that certain Kriegsmarine wall clocks were commonly used on all ty

There are so many variables to your question that it can't be answered by one all encompassing statement. The tactics used to combat an air attack changed during the war, but were also dependent on other conditions such as: whether or not the u-boot is in a calm or rough sea, the colour of paint the u-boot had, whether or not the u-boot was travelling alone or with another u-boot or even the

Very nice photos, thanks for posting them. The photo you wanted translated reads as follows: On the left plaque it says "In memory of all German sailors and their opponents who lost their lives in both World Wars." On the centre plaque it says "Monument to those of every nation who remained at sea. Memorial to a peaceful voyage on free seas." And on the right, &

So that other uboat.net members don't waste their time enquiring as to the fate of this clock, the OP sold it for a very generous offer. The item in question looked to be the commonly used KM wall clock made by Kieninger & Obergfell and fitted with an 8 day movement.

I'm afraid you would have to provide a lot more information if you want an opinion as to its worth. Photos would help too as well as a detailed description of its condition. There were many clocks used aboard a U-boot. If it's in a wooden box on a moving gimbal it's probably a chronometer which would be far more valuable than say an ordinary wall clock or observation watch. Wha

To my recollection there have been many films (including The Enemy Below) in which dead bodies were loaded into a tube. I'd suggest asking in the LEMB forum. There isn't a Luftwaffe wreck that those guys don't know about.

You leave them in your car!?! Let's hope it never gets broken into and that bit of history is lost forever... I believe only pre-war U-boots were marked with their boat numbers which were removed at the outbreak of hostilites. I don't think I understand the connection you're making between a plaque that stated where the binoculars came from and whether or not U-boots had the

Great stuff gentlemen. I appreciate your suggestions and will get a few of those books on order. I've read a couple dozen u-boot related books, however most make little mention of the midget sub operations, which I have to admit has become intriguing to me since I saw one at a local museum. At the moment I'm just finishing Doenitz's "Memoirs". It's hard to beli

Excellent information. Thanks once again Rainer. I'm surprised that with such relatively modest successes that so much energy was put into this program. Even if every unaccounted for sinking was attributed to the midget sub program, would the overall tally have made it worthwhile? I've scanned through the book section, but can anyone recommend a good book on this subject? I'm

Thanks Rainer! I always scour over a website for the information I'm looking for before posting a question, but somehow my search didn't turn up that page, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for the book suggestion; I'll certainly look it up. If such a list doesn't exist, is anyone aware of an easy way to take recorded position of a sunken U-boot and quickly get an average depth of the ocean in that particular area?

Is there a listing similar to the one for U-boots that lists the most successful midget submarines? Or even a list of ships sunk by midget subs?

Hi everyone, I hope I'm not asking a something that it frequently covered, but does a concise list exist anywhere that details every sunken u-boot, their location and depth that can be visited by a recreational diver? Thanks in advance, Uwe

Further to Neil's post, cover the swastika with a small piece of paper when you take the photos. I've never understood eBay's policy on this; it seems rather naive to think someone trying to sell a vintage clock is being hateful. Oh, and please post the new link here, I'll be interested in it as well.

I don't know a thing about modern subs (what is a boomer anyway?), but the news report I saw claimed they were both in "stealth" mode and as a result were not being picked up by either side. I don't think it's that crazy that two subs could collide, there have been other cases. I'm sure I've read that a few U-boots came close as well.

Are you sure about the first name? I found one Maschinengefreite with the surname Fabian, but his first name was Helmut. He died on the 5th of Oct. 1943 s/w of Iceland while serving on U-389.

I've seen them listed on eBay on occasion. It's hit and miss I know, but worth a try.

The answer is: it depends! Which kit are you ordering? The Wolf Pack or Atlantic version? Even then, there are different boat numbers to choose from, so the paint scheme will vary. You can download the plans for each kit off the Revell website. You can take a look at the various paints you'll need if you want to plan ahead of time.

Hi everyone, I've searched the internet as well as this forum and can't see to find an answer to a simple question: what are the differences between the two U-995 boats in the Revell 1/72 Atlantic kit? I just bought the kit (my first in, um, 30 years) and decided to build the U-995 but then noticed there are two paint schemes in the instructions without any explanation for what th
