Johannes..........There is not much that I can add to what you have written. Although I was never fortunate enough to meet him in person we have exchanged emails (funny and serious) over the last few months and I felt that I did know him, reasonably well, as well as anyone can via the internet. I know that his strong presence will be sorely missed by many on this forum. May his dear soul re

Looking at the pics on www.atlantik-pirat.com I feel very saddened to see that such a wonderful craft will end up in 4 bits, no, not sections just four bits of a U-boat. Bow and stern near each other and not even in a straight line with the midships cut into two parts and placed to one side. Is it not possible to put all the sections in a line so that at least she will look like a U-boat and not

Hi Dave, The Golden Horseshoe and Dan Gallerys account of the sinking of U505 are old books but a good ones. None of us can say what we would or would not have done in similar circumstances but the sea is a very unforgiving enemy and in some cases something called 'the sanctity of human life' kicks in. That is quite possible. Former U-boat men are/were Very unforgiving towards those they believe/knew let the side down them either intentionally or unintentionally. The name of Hans-Joachim Rahmlow was never mentioned in their company and anyone who did was virtually 'cut dead' in that conversation. Even in innocent questions to try and find out more about him and the U-570. The IWO l

Never heard of wolf-packs operating in the Med in WW2. It isn't a very large area compared to other seas/oceans. The Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar on the west and to the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, by the Dardanelles and the Bosporus respectively, on the east. The Sea of Marmara is often considered a part of the Mediterranean Sea,

Rather doubtful. The War at Sea (3 vols.) was published 1954-1961 and The Battle of the Atlantic in 1955. Although thorough and respected works that were current at the time a great deal more information has come to light since then. Stephen Wentworth Roskill DSC, FBA (1 August 1903 - 4 November 1982) was an officer in the Royal Navy and, after his retirement, served as the official histori

I wonder just what Kptlt Hans Jenisch and K.Kapt Wilfred Prellberg would have thought of these successors to their U 31 & U 32? Having known them both I would dearly have loved to discuss the differences with them. MPC

Hi Ken, Would you happen to know the name and/or any other details of the munitions ship torpedoed by K.z.S. Merten that, when it exploded lifted the U 68 up quite a few feet and could have been the end of her? Regards MPC

Reminds me a bit of a British naval officer who married into the Royal Family. He was also a pen pusher and not much good with ships but does at present hold the rank of Vice Admiral. Perhaps because of who he married and who his mother-in-law is. Life doesnt seem fair sometimes when better officers get passed over :-((

Larry, This post has taken up an awful lot of time in reading it and space on this forum. I think you would do well to re-read some, if not all, of the posts of Ken Dunn and take his kindly and well meant advice. After all he really does know what he is talking about. Regards
