Janus, I do not think that there is much more help you can get from this site. It is, after all, dedicated to German U-boats who were in the Axis forces. Perhaps you would be better looking further into the Polish sites. The Polish soldiers, sailors and airmen fought for the Allies and Very brave they were too - I for one salute them all. With best wishes MPC

Hi, To conserve fresh water for drinking and cooking. Also there wern't the washing and showering facilities that surface ships could offer. At the end of a patrol especially a long one they smelt of sweat, fuel oil, cooking odours and all other smells associated with those of a number of men who work and live in a confined space. MPC

Hello VEK et All, VEK you wrote:- "be preserved intact, be that from the Anglo Saxon point of view or from us Continentals who signed the petition on her behave." It's from all points of view. But please remember that us Anglo Saxons, as you choose to call us) never, ever had U-boats - we had Submarines. It was the Axis forces that had U-boats (something W.S. Churchill said ab

Hi to All who are interested and especially those who signed the petetion originated by Atlantik Pirate (thanks mate), These links I got in an email from 10 Downing Street. Personally I do not hold out much hope from a government who cares little about the living and even less about history and those who gave their lives that we might live in peace. It is not P.C. to remember the

Hi again Michael D, I know Julius Lauterbach is somewhat 'off topic' and probably some will moan but as I mentioned in an earlier posting there was a U-boat commander by the name of Lauterbach-Emden. If you do come across any details of a family relationship please, please let me know. Have a look at the following links. Quite a bit of reading I will admit but very very good for

Hi All, Does anyone have any information on the early life/career of Oblt.z.S. William Holpert C34 who was born 11.6.1914 in London England & died with all his crew on U 1021 c14.3.45? What were his parents doing here at that time and did they return to Germany on the outbreak of war? Did he have dual nationality? If they stayed in England whereabouts did they live? Anything el

Hi Dave, There should be more copies in the antipodies than the rest of the world as it was printed there. Better a new copy than a second-hand one so email the publishers and see what they say. I just did. No probs getting to a pub here ask the RNZAF for a lift. I was an a memorial for Charles Upham some years ago (at the NZ HC) and some of the aircrew were moaning about travelling halfw

A salute is a mark of respect to a person who has earned that respect. In my country - In your country - One a private the other a Major-General but both worthy of respect. Ending a message with things such as Best Wishes/(Kind) Regards etc. are a matter of politeness/etiquette/formality and if not meant why put them. You earn it - you get it........ MPC

I personally don't see anything to be proud of it is, after all, only a book. Anyone who writes a book puts their own words into it be they fact or fiction. It is for the reader to make up their own mind. All you have done is to take up a great deal of space on someone else's web site. Was that your original intention? That space that could have been put to far better use. I t

I have read some of these posts, not all I will admit, as they just seem to go on and on and on and on............ Perhaps in there somewhere is what is known in some navies as "a lower-deck lawyer" or two (all navies seem to have them in one form or another) and boy, can some of them really "swing that lantern" and keep a tale going ad infinitum. Suppositions, what if&#

Hi, I think the U-boat you saw in the Deutsches Museum was the first German U-boat the SMU 1 commissioned on 14.12.1906. At 238/283 tons & speeds of 10.8/8.7 knots (the first figures are for surface and the second for submerged) 1 bow torpedo tube with three torpedoes 22 crew and a range of just 1500 seemiles it would not have got very far. Compared to a WW2 type IXC of 1120/1232 to

To those who are readers of Jak Mallmann Showell's books. I have just, about 30 minutes, ago got advanced notice of two books that should be coming out in the not too distant future by Jak Showell. The first "Unknown, Forgotten and Hidden History of Germany 1918-1948" should be due out about the end of February 2008. It is not a book about U-boats but it covers things that wen

Hi Stewart, The following might be of some help. It lists some R.A. sites so it's just a matter of having a quick skeg at each one to see if it is any use. There are Merchant Navy sites but as the guy you are looking for was military I doubt if there will be much info on those sites as the DEMS gunners were probably not listed as part of the ships actual crew. You may be able to

Hi, Go to the following link. It will give details of the battle and of the U-boats involved with commanders names and a list of ships and their tonnage sunk. It will NOT give you names of Merchant crews or DEMS gun crews. You will have to look elsewhere for that. Possibly the PRO in Kew or the CWGC in Maidenhead can help. Also put maritime regiments into a search engine and see what comes

Hi Funkmeister, Many thanks for the interesting info. Being ex- British Merchant Navy myself I do have a great deal of respect for the radio officers who though they didn't have an exciting job for much of the time had to know what they were doing regarding sending and receving messages in morse/voice etc. Also in the case of their own ships being torpedoed or in danger of sinking from what
