You wrote:- "I am interested in reading about U-Boats off the American coasts. Its kinda scary to think about U-Boats being so close to our homes back in the 40s." U-boats were actively operating in US waters as far back as the Great War. One of them the DEUTSCHLAND (when she was a merchant submarine) even put into an American port a couple of times in 1916 for commerce purposes

Sorry Michael, I do not know what other awards he might have been given. Perhaps the Saxon ones that Igor mentioned as he was a Saxon by birth. As I said before, most if not all of the German kingdoms and principalities had their own awards and decorations which, were in the main, unrelated to the Prussian or Hohenzollern ones. Take for example Karl-Siegfried Ritter von Georg. He was eleva

Thanks again kpp, I had always understood that he was a U-boat commander but that information was learnt many a long year ago, when we were both a lot younger and less knowledgable than now :-)) I suppose anyone who commanded a U-boat on its short and sad voyage to surrender in the U.K. could officially be classed as a U-boat commander but not in the sense that is generally recognised. "..it was noted to be the same uboat from the episode with the ghost ship. My grandfather was ordered to stand to attention, and hold a salute, as the uboat sailors were machine gunned. In retaliation." That above sentence I find extremely hard if not impossible to believe of any maritime nation. A seaman ordered to stand at the salute while fellow human beings were, in effect,

Thank you for bringing it to the attention of the forum posters. I, myself, had not seen it but upon checking see that his name is spelt incorrectly. Possibly a transposition error or by someone not 100% familiar with the written German. I will onpass the info in a few moments. Thanks again MPC

Hallo VEK, I didn't re-read all the posts before I posted my one. Perhaps it can be put down to a "senior moment" if you know what I mean :-)) Hope to email you in a day or two about your last one. It's still safe so no worries there. With kindest regards, MPC

Hi Simon, I have also noted the info in your last post. Do you have confirmation on the DoD of both Hans Rose and Max Viebeg as they both have a "?" after the dates? Also any information on Otto Wuensche dying at the young age of 34.5 years? With my best wishes, MPC

I believe that he was also stalling for time to allow as many German troops and civilians to escape from the East and make their way to the relative safety of those armies coming from the West. MPC

Gentlemen, Yet again some help is required. Enrenranglist ............... states (page169) that K.Kapt. Ferdinand Studt commanded SMU 155 from 5.18 - 11.18 It also states (page 251) that Kptlt Karl Dischler commanded SMU 155 from 6.18 - 11.18. Gentlemen, I do thank you most sincerely for your help. I first learnt of the loss of SMU 3 in Kiel Bay on 17.1.1911 and the death of her commander and some of his men many years ago in a copy of "NAUTICUS 1911". It seems that this and other early peace-time losses of submariners and submarines are virtually unknown to the modern generation of students of submarine warfare. It is

Hi All, Elsewhere on this site it states that he was commander of SMU 52 17.11.17 - 28.2.17(should be 18) & that SMU 52 was in the II flotilla 27.4.17 - 11.11.18. Eherenrangliste der Kaiserliche Deutschen Marine states that he was born 5.12.1884 Crew 4.02. Kptlt 15.11.13(C). Also he was from "4.17 - 6.17 U=boots=Sch. Ausb., Werft Kiel, Assist. f. Hi Barry, Sure you didn't mean 'HYPERGOLIC' Hypergolic – adjective (esp. of rocket-fuel propellant constituents) igniting spontaneously upon contact with a complementary substance. I wonder if some of the propellants used by the Germans as rocket/U-boat propellants were that?? Hyperbole (not hyperbolic) is a figure of speech which is an exaggeration. Surely not you

For any who may be interested. F/O Lloyd Allan Trigg VC DFC (5 May 1914–11 August 1943), of Houhora, New Zealand, was a pilot in the RNZAF. He was the only serviceman in either World War I or World War II to be awarded a Victoria Cross on evidence solely provided by the enemy, for an action in which there were no surviving Allied witnesses to corroborate his gallantry. Trigg was an exp

Hi Barry, You wrote:- "Thousands of Irishmen faught on the side of the Allies, with large numbers paying the ultimate price, many at the hands of German submarines." Yes, indeed they did often with great courage and bravery winning quite a few medals in their so doing. Indeed, the first act of valour to be awarded the Victoria Cross was by an Irishman, a Mate (later Rear Admi

Peter, I think that you approached the subject from the wrong direction. Had you mentioned first that you were researching Operation Deadlight and the possible raising of a U-boat to go on public display (which, by the way, I think is a very good idea but not at the cost of more human lives) I am sure you would have got better feedback from the posters here. You could then have mentioned the

Hi All, Information is required on the date and place of death of the following U-boat commanders (place of birth would be of interest if possible). They would all be over 100 years old, if still alive but I believe the oldest German serviceman still alive is about 108 years old. Helmut Brummer-Patzig C 10 born 26.10.1890 Walte Burghagen C 11 born 21.9.1891 in Dresden Wilhelm Kiesewetter

Many Thanks Ron, Something I didn't know (well we are all on a learning curve most of the time). It is an interesting bit of information. The correct name for the WO is Oblt.z.S.d.R Hinrich Hermann Hashagen. He was born 28.8.1885. I have often wondered if he was related to the more successful commander Kptlt Ernst Hashagen who was born 24.8.1885. They are very close dates of birth.
