Fregatte, I agree with your remarks entirely. As you say Ken Dunn, as always makes the point and a good one at that. His postings are always worth reading. The German Naval Officers of the period mentioned were first and foremost seaman and damn fine ones at that. When one reads of some of the feats they performed both against the enemy and the sea, who is friend to none, in such small craf

There were some that were ardent Nazi's, some that were indifferent and some that were anti-Nazi. It appears as if some of the senior commanders were. But these days it seems to depend on what books one reads. I have my own views on some of them. Regards MPC

Thanks to all of you who posted on this subject. I spoke to Paul Mengelberg last Wednesday and he mentioned the name of a torpedo mechanic Paul Schweers. Thanks to the internet I managed to find Herr Schweers, called him and they have been in touch again. Great to know that old shipmates are once again in touch no matter what country they served. MPC

Mark, You wrote:- 'Iron Coffins' A superb and detailed account of the reality of war in the Atlantic from a U-Boat perspective. I hope that you have read some of the comments on your post. Might I suggest that you read quite a few more books on the subject before you make such comments again? There are many books around and quite a few are listed on this site - have a look.

Many thanks Bruce, Max and Paul, This, I know is a subject dear to many of our hearts. Those poor *B* fighting, being wounded and killed and in a war that was not of their making and a government not willing to help them if it can possibly avoid doing so. Yes, it does have an echo or two in the past including U-boat men. Thanks once again Gentlemen. Most sincerely MPC

HiYa Ken, Yes, I didn't mention that Kptlt. Eck was the only proven GERMAN case during the Second World War. That has left a stain on the charachter of the German Uboat force. Sadly there were others on both sides and in both wars. But, in the main once your enemies ship has been sunk and survivors are in the water you do what you can to assist them. After all the greater enemy is the se

In the Royal Navy - The term has been used in the Royal Navy since the time of King Charles I. Originally the Master-at-Arms was a petty officer who looked after personal arms such as swords and firearms, ensuring they were kept in good order and their ammunition was prepared and ready for use in combat. He also instructed other members of the crew in the use of arms. He later also became resp

Hi Amanda, Sure you can ask if you so desire but I cannot promise to answer as you would perhaps wish. I was with GSNCo. in the late 50's and also met K.Kapt Schnee (who sank the Stork whilst in command of U 201) in the early 70's. He, for a German, had quite a good sense of humour & I do not mean to offend any Germans who post here but their humour is a lot different from tha

Hi Amanda, Some very interesting postings about OG 71 but it seems that nobody has thought to post the following links from this site. The 1st is about the convoy. The 2nd is about the Stork. The 3rd is about the Aguila on which the WRNS were travelling and lost their lives. Hope this is of some interest/use to you. I have looked at the British Merchant Navy & General Ste

I hope that someone can help particularly with addresses/phone numbers (do not post them here please) Regards to all MPC PS Ken D. - you know who I mean
