John, I don't know if it will be of any help but has anyone tried contacting Blkohm und Voss directly for information? I know a lot of German records were destroyed during and after WW2 but it just might be worth a try. Perhaps the U=Boot=Archiv in Cuxhaven might be able to help. Good Luck to you all MPC

Do you mean SMUB 33 sunk in position 50.55N x 01.17E on 11.4.18 (see link below) or SMUB 38 sunk in position 50.56N x 01.25E 8.2.18? They are both UB II type and are from the same builders yard, B & V Hamburg and being sister ships any specs should not vary greatly. MPC

GOD CREATED SUBMARINERS Story Told By Rear Admiral Jay Donnelly at the North Central Regional held at Des Moines, Iowa. Lifted from the Illinois Scope Newsletter. In the beginning was the word and the word was God and all else was darkness and void without form. So God created the heavens and the earth. Noel, May I, for one, wish you the very best of luck in trying to get a reply from the German Embassy particularly by email. Within the past year I have contacted both the German and Austrian embassys with questions relating to U-boats but have never had a reply. In the 1960's I contacted two former Kriegsmarine officers,K.z.S Rolf Rüggeberg (U 512 commander) and F.Kapt. Günter W

I hope you will all forgive me for this very off topic posting. Only the British can sign the petition so I hope all of you from other countries will not mind this posting as it does help to reach a wider audience. The British Government has denied any ex-Gurkha soldier who retired before 1997 the right to stay in this country. I won't go into all the details, but I do believe that the

Hi JD, I'm sorry but I for one won't be able to meet you and your father in Germany. - Just wish I could, and meet you and some of the other interesting guys who post here.... I am not sure whether this is allowed on the forum , but, I was just thinking whether anybody on the forum living near or otherwise would be up for a dinner night out in Hamburg? - it is just myself and my o

Hi JD, I have been reading this thread with interest. It is many a long year since I was in Hamburg, Kiel etc. and you have brought back some very fond memories of being at an International Submariners meeting in the former city and a trip to Helgoland. Gudmundur was right when he suggested posting here - all the guys are extremely helpful There are some good eating places and watering ho

105. Re: U-89
Check these links out. It doesn't seem that there was much,if any connection, between the two officers. That is not to say that there wasn't any as one of the other two Double V.C. holders was distantly related to Captain N.G. Chavasse, V.C. & Bar, M.C. by marriage. MPC

Hi Steve, Original - yes. It is by Karl Wiebicke. Copyright 1934 by Koehler Verlag, Leipzig and is one of the 16 - 20,000 print run. I suggest that you post in the WW1 forum for any medals relating to Kptlt Heinrich Jeß as there are people around who can help you on that subject better than I can. Good Luck MPC

Adrian, Thank you for your comments. The last successful invasion of England was in 1066. You do not have to win all the battles to win the war. Some we won and some we lost but one should not loose sight of the fact that the fighting men were not just English. There were many brave men from the other countries comprising the United Kingdom. Please not that it Admiral Lord Nelson (not Lord

Hi Steve, Found the book and will have a quick 'skeg' through it asap & post again. There are some pics of the commander etc. but doubt if it will the SS Destro by name or mention his post war career. As for the medals - there are some here with a better knowledge than I who should be able to help you. Regards MPC

Following is from one of Winston Churchill's speeches. N.B. the last paragraph in particular:- Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we

schalke, The Cruel Sea is a work of fiction but based on fact. It was written by Nicolas Monserrat who as an officer in the R.N.V.R. rose to the rank of Lt.Cdr. I believe that he disliked the Germans with a great intensity. Regarding the film itself - some of the things you have observed in the (1953) film could be put down to 'artistic licence' Regards MPC

Dear All Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition that was launched requesting a new public holiday falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year. To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday, it's got three aims: 1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain 2. To remind

Hello Funkmeister, It is good that someone has remembered those poor souls who perished that day in which was possibly the greatest maritime disaster in regards loss of human life. People sometimes forget that the young and the innocent are also casualties of war no matter what country they come from. May they all Rest in Peace. Regards MPC

Hi Michele, As far as I can remember Wolfgang Lüth was survived by his wife and children and I believe that one of his daughters was living in the UK during the 1960's(?) According to one author (perhaps Harald Busch) he was a good officer and was well liked and respected by his men. His attitude was to the effect - "You only have to care for them and they will do their best for
