Career information
He went to HMS Worcester, graduated in 1923 and joined Clan Line. Rose to the rank of Captain. Was RNR and joined RN at start of War. He was in command of HMS Burwell at the capture of U-570.
Returned to command in Clan Line after the war. Retired November 1967 and passed away from emphysema 16 Feb 1968

The Belgian merchant Gand was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-556 about 210 miles south-east of Cape Farewell. HMS Burwell (Lt.Cdr. S.R.J. Woods, RNR) later picks up 43 survivors and landed them at Reykjavik on 17 May.

10 Aug 1944 (position 46.30, -3.08)
German U-boat U-608 was sunk in the Bay of Biscay north-west of La Rochelle, in position 46°30'N, 03°08'W, by depth charges from the British sloop HMS Wren (Lt.Cdr. S.R.J. Woods, DSC, RNR) and a British Liberator aircraft (53 Sqn RAF/C).
