Hi again!

Here's short story of PIORUN (you were right Andreas, PIORUN was a little bit busy in WW2!) : PIORUN was launched as HMS NERISSA, as one of the N class destroyers. Built as Fleet Destroyer. She was loaned from British Navy on 5.XI.1940 to Polish Navy. During 1941 PIORUN was operating on Atlantic. She took part in searching of German Battleships GNEISENAU and SCHARNHORST. She also searched BISMARCK (and PIORUN has even battle contact with German battleship). From September of 1941 to summer of 1942 she was convoying through the Atlantic
Ocean and Arctic Sea. In 1943 PIORUN was operating in the Mediterranean. She took part in the D-Day and on 9.VI.1944 fight in the battle near Quessant where she took part in sikning of 2 enemy destroyers: ZH 1 and Z 32. Seven days later near St. Molo, she destroyed with British destroyer ASHANTI two German minesweepers. M 83 and M 343 were sunk, but PIORUN was damaged. Two month later with British cruiser DIADEM and destroyer ONSLAUGHT (sic!) she sunk German blockade breaker SPERRBRECHER VII (ex SAUERLAND - 7087 BRT), and ... in January 1945 PIORUN with British destroyer ONSLAUGHT sunk German U-boat U 1020 winking smiley). After war she was returned on 28.IX.1946 and in 1955 NERISSA was sold for scrapping.

There is no question which Polish destroyer! Why?? Because from 6 destoyers of Polish Navy in January 1945 3 were staying in repairs in the shipyard (BLYSKAWICA , GARLAND and KRAKOWIAK). 1 was in reserve (BURZA), 1 was patroling English Channel (SLAZAK). This left only PIORUN as possible Polish destroyer.

And yes Adreas maybe you're right that Rohwer want to indicates that that was a POLISH destroyer, not British!!

Sadly I still can't find any info about PIORUN duty in 1945. This is realy strange, what more all of the Polish attacks on the enemy submarines are described, why this one isn't?? Why we don't know excat date of the sinking?? And why Rohwer knew only name of ONSLAUGHT - because if you knew one name of the ship its very simple to find out tthe name of the other book for example log book.

Best wishes,
Andrzej
