The type XXI gun turret was manned by 3 crewmen that could enter it from either the top or from the back of the turret. In the original plan 30mm guns were to be used but they proved to have problems and the much underpowered 20mm gun was used in its place . The gun turret was not water tight but free flooding and could rotate 180 degrees in each direction and the gun gun elevate +45 degrees or -5 degrees hydraulically . These guns were not totally remote as they still had to be loaded by hand . This was not a water tight compartment with a self loading gun laying platform .
