XXI doctrine

">The designers of this boat did not have AA guns planned but these were added later for the moral of the crew so they did not feel defenceless against an air attack.<" Actually, the early doctrine for XXI use was to operate mainly on the surface, however, by the time the XXI actually became available in the second half of 1944, that idea was more or less dead.

Remember the XXI is based on the XVIII which was a Walter boat designed to operate on the surface at night. It was only supposed to attack underwater, but was intended to operate like a conventional U-boat during the march. Had the XVIII or XXI been designed from the beginning as snorkel boats for underwater only cruising, then they would have been designed as modified tear drop boats. From the hull design point of view, the XXI was a dead end.
