From what I gather from the varioys pictures that I have seen a " visual box " would be correct . It looks like it was raised above the top turret edge when the gun was at a high elevation and it does look like a rod or linkage going down to the gun . There are books that show all of the radar ,radio and other gear found in the type XXI and none show anything that would be needed for a remote control and aimed AA fire control system . For a boat designed to stay submerged for long periods of time why would you bother with such a complicated design . Remember those turrets were not water tight at the guns or hatches .
