Electroboats

Hi all,
I'm involved in a special research project relating to the normal day-to-day operation of the type XXI Electroboats. Why did they require 57 crew for
example?

What I'm trying to do is to decide whether a type XXI, if a sound and seaworthy one existed, could be used today if it underwent significant refitting with
modern equipment.

Again for example, I wonder if it would be possible to replace the main
engine, generator, batteries, air conditioning system, electrics with
modern equipment and electronics, modern radar and navigation, and modern
armament. Perhaps then the crew complement could be significantly reduced?

Are there any sources which contain details and specifications of daily operations, including warfare, of these boats?

There seem to be some very knowledgeable people in this forum...I hope to hear from one or two.

Regards, Ian Edwards.
