Hello J. T.,
I will have to check out the JAG scenes. I don't watch the program so haven't seen it. I will have to check out "down Periscope." Didn't pay that much attention...
More B-Girl trivia for you. The director of HFRO and Scott Glen decided to use real submariners in the USS Dallas control room scenes after going to sea on Blueback for a couple of days and figuring out you can't fake the real thing. I believe the Dallas control room scenes were filmed in a 688 class diving trainer. Control room just to big, different Ballast control Panel and fire control system than a B-girl.
Barbel was used for some scenes in "Crimson Tide" pier side shots to be exact. At the time she had been bought by Southwest Marine of San Pedro CA for scrapping. They had cut off her sail and part of her superstructure decking aft of the sail when they discovered the ventilation system throughout the interior compartments was wrapped with asbestos lagging which had been painted over many times in her 30 year career. That killed their scrapping plans. Anyway, Disney Studios built a new sail and superstructure to simulate the USS Alabama for the pier side scenes. Because it would cost Southwest Marine more to do the asbestos lagging removal than they could make on scrapping her, the defaulted on her sale terms with the US Navy. The Navy repossessed her hulk last year. She was towed out to sea near San Clemente Island in February this year and sunk as a target. She was a great boat and I enjoyed the five years I spent on her.
Cheers,
Patrick
