the Pampanito

The old diesel boat used in 'Down Periscope' - a movie too silly for me to have sat fully thru yet - is special.

It is the USS Pampanito. It is a moderately famous WWII boat, but is now a museum in San Fransico, with a unique distinction.

The important part about the USS Pampanito is that it is still seaworthy - at least it can move under its own power (Don't think it still dives, though). It is, I believe, the last WWII boat that saw WWII combat that can put to sea under its own power. That is why it was used in the film - no need for expensive models or CG effects for the surface underway shots! Just order 'All ahead flank!!'
