This is, in fact, precisely the reason ballast tanks and internal tanks are divided into several sections instead of one long tank on either side. This is also why the U-shaped tanks in Holland boats were considered superior to the flat-topped tanks in Lake boats, though in a transverse, rather than a longitudinal axis. (Not that Lake had any choice, since Holland held the patent on the better design, which also had the additional benefit of letting the designers place the batteries much lower in the hull.)
