I can now understand the sloshing effect.
Would a proper translation of "freie Oberflächen in den achteren Bilgen"
then be "aft bilge water broaching deck" or "sloshing above deck in aft bilges"?
Obviously "free surfaces" does not get the point across in English.

But that leaves the question - why only the aft bilges? Since the U-Boat is at a uniform up-angle, all bilges should have the same problem.
