Hi Wayne,
Pressure vessel thickness on both VIIc and IXc etc was 18.5mm
(only planned type VIIc/42 was to have 25mm plate thickness, but none were built). Don't recall any case of penetration by A/C mach gun fire.
A small hole like that could be patched temporarily during a shallow dive from the inside by use of conventional braces etc if in an accessible location. Once the air was clear again, a doubler could be patch welded over the hole from the outside. Small steel pieces and welding equipment were aboard. Rgds, RB
