Hi Robert,
Not sure abt das Boot - has been years and years, since I saw it last. But seem to recall, that there were plenty of bombs dropped from the fighterbombers.
At any rate the type VII was able to float as well as submerge by using internal trim and dive tanks with most external tanks inoperable. In such case ofc she would float pretty low, with reserve buoyancy a bit un the uncomfortable side. Also remember, saddle tanks were three compartments P&S. Naturally a sloppy trim would result, if all were shot up on one side.
If I remember correctly, deck casing, tower and saddle tanks were 5mm steel. Rgds, RB
