Hello Michael,
Thanks for your reaction.
The records about the number of ships lost are never twice de same. Even in my country, those records are variable from source to source. Sometime one take ships above 500 grt, sometimes 300, etc.
A reliable BE-source stated (+/- 1960) that the Belgian M. Marine fleet lost 89 ships between 01.01.1914 and 31.12.1918. (45 by means of war, 11 due to storm or collision at sea, 26 were sold and 7 remains Belgian but were out-flagged !!!)
But up to now, my figures are not the same !
For example, you state that there were 5 vessels mined; I count roughly at least 1 more [Aquatic (uc-4), Flandres, Gasconier, Hastier, Ministre de Smet de Naeyer and Prince Albert (uc-1)]
About the GASCONIER : same info as you + 6 people lost. MINISTRE DE SMET DE NAEYER : sank in Pos 55°33N-04°39 E – 12 p. lost.
EVARISTUS and PAYS BAS were not recorded as Belgian ships !
FLANDRES (4.227 grt) was mined on the 08.04.1918 at 00.45 p.m. in Pos 55°36 N – 04°42 E
L’AVENIR was a 4 mast-bark training ship with cargo (2.738 grt / 2.154 netto). She sailed from 1908 until 1932 under Belgian flag and was never attacked during WWI. She was sold in 1936 to Aland’s Eriksson en later to Germany. She sunk as ADMIRAL KARPFANGER near Cap Horn in 1938.
At the other hand, could you send me the names of the 3 ships damaged by u-boot and the 4 captured;I will check and compare it for you.
If any other info needed, please apply !
Cheers,
Freddy.
