<br> On the finish the years to Stockholm seemingly again returned to the events of the long ago past years, which agitated entire country, in the eightieth years. Then Swedes even in summer perceived frost on the skin from constant reports of press, hearing, government statements relative to the unidentified submarines, in the daytime and at night darting about in the Swedish skerries. A priori it was implied and was asserted at the climax of the Cold War that they can be only Soviet. This led into the trembling not only satisfactory neutral Sweden, but also entire western half of the world. To the detection, the catching, and if it is required and the destruction of strange underwater "objects" was cast entire Swedish Royal Navy. However, that these were for the ghosts, which it chased, so it remained riddle.
<br>
<br> After two decades to explain it undertook Swedish diplomat Rolf Ekeus. Recently in Stockholm is published his study, in which is made one additional attempt to answer sacramental questions of this mysterious history. Actually whether this was the Soviet Union, which, being prepared for the war with NATO, did select Swedish skerries as the underwater polygon for trainings of the crews of its low-tonnage submarines and landing force members? Or these were the ships of NATO, which did probe the defense capability of Sweden, and at the same time did toss up logs into the bonfires of suspiciousness and intensity in the Baltic region?
<br>
<br> Is known only one real case with the ship of Soviet Baltic fleet. In 1981 Soviet U-137 was discovered near Karlskrona city. The incident produced much noise. After a lapse of the years the author of a fresh study is inclined to see in it faster the navigation error of the captain of boat, than evidence of unkind designs. Rolf Ekeus so did not find confirmation of version about the goal-directed actions of Soviet Navy.

<br> The game of Swedish Navy in cat-mouse with the unidentified underwater objects lasted by years. As recognizes the now former chief of the analytical center of Navy Leif Holmstron, in 99% of cases the declared anxiety proved to be false. Hysteria led to the absurdity. Vigilant citizens sounded the alarm, after accepting swan neck for the periscope. But in the raised atmosphere and to military professionals now and then seemed to on the screen of radar not the inoffensive door post of herring, but the submarine, which tacks in the territorial waters with the clearly hostile purposes.

<br> Only in remaining one percent of the cases the discussion actually could deal with the submarine disturbers, moreover "both NATO and not NATO". In contrast to the the unlucky U-137 none of the submarines of alliance fell. However, there is no doubt, that they also appeared in the Swedish waters. The researcher of the problems of the peace of Ole Tunander gives the case of 1982, when the former leader of the antisubmarine operation Bror Stefenson without the agreement with the government actually helped the flight of discovered submarine of one of the NATO alliance countries, which secretly proved to be in Harsfjord bay. Stefenson rejects suspicion, asserting that there was no design - only insufficient competence was said. But not too randomly in the country as before they have assumption about the intentional agreement of the military circles of Sweden and NATO, that were striving with the aid of the secret operations, in the first place, to support ideas about the Soviet threat, but in the second place, to prevent the savings of defense budget, provided social-democratic by the government in Stockholm of those days.

<br> Unfortunately, and study of Mr. Ekeus does not give the comprehensive response to a main question about that, whose, if not virtual, submarines struck terror into Sweden and was how much such disturbers of its calmness. Probably, for this it is necessary to open the inaccessible even more secret archives of Soviet, NATO and Swedish Navy of that time. But thus far entire truth about this history, which prevents in the number of others about folly of block opposition, remains to lie on the bottom of Swedish skerries.
