The government of Sweden charged to known to diplomat Rolf Ekeus to conduct a new study of the theme known as "periscope syndrome". Rolf Ekeus was Ambasador of Sweden in the USA and commissar of UN in the matters of national minorities. He is expert well-known in the world.
Periscope syndrome was similar to the protracted general national hysteria, which periodically initiated both the military servicemen and press and many of policy. In the Swedish waters repeatedly began the hunting for the mysterious submarines, similar to the military actions. The ships of Coast Guard left to sea, straits were partitioned off by antisubmarine nets, the hydrophones descended from the helicopters into the water and depth charges rushed. Hysteria was so strong that in Sweden grew entire generation in those years which without doubt called harmful disturber - at first the USSR, and then Russia.
In the report of Rolf Ekeus contained conclusion: The authorities of Sweden unjustifiably charged the USSR and Russian Federation with the fact that the submarines of this country disrupted Swedish territorial waters in of the 1980th and in the beginning 1990th.
I do not have foundations for doubting the conclusions of Swedish experts.
It is obvious that the "periscope syndrome" was usual company for brains washing within the framework of the propaganda of the Cold War and it was directed against the USSR without any proofs and the bases. This was usual practice in those years.
The recollections of the officer of that participated in the patrol of U-137 are known to me. Submarine went on the surface producing much noise and without attempting to remain unnoticed. When navigator reported to the captain the coordinate of submarine captain stated that the navigator is idiot and promise to remove him from the submarine after the return to the base. Several minutes leter after this statement the submarine ran on the rocks. I may transfer and send to you these recollections.
