<HTML>Dear Yury,
Russian Sub Captains and Engineers can be anything but not naive. After all, they got a lot of good underwater German technology :-)
About the Karlskrona incident, to which we are referring, please observe the following details:
1) In 1981 the inertial platform technology was fully developed, and I can't believe that a period's sub, even a Soviet one, did not have at least TWO independent sets.
2) Karlskrona fjord is long and narrow, it could not be navigate blind without major risks of hull damage on rocky shores but it might anyway be navigated underwater with very fine batimetric charts and equipment. (Spaghetti-eaters-mandolin-players sub Captains always passed trough Gibraltar like that and in both ways).
3) With failed navigation equipment one wise sub Captain would have surfaced and got the chance to brush up his long forgotten ability to use the sextant and the chronometer :-( or at least order his IWO or Navigator to do that :-)
4) Some of the above considerations can also be referred to the South Korean Jumbo shooting game.
Thereafter I have always considered those incidents as elaborated provocation to test the opponents’ reaction times and procedures. Do not forget I am from Machiavelli’s land.
Greetings
