<HTML>Rainer,
Many greetings - and thank you for your comments which made me dig out most of my reference books!
The \'Belgrano\' was laid down by the New York Shipbuilders 15.4.35 and commissioned 18.3.39. She was one of the \'Brooklyn\' class, from which derived the \'Cleveland\' class cruisers. The \'Clevelands\' mounted 6\" guns. The \'Brooklyn\'s were built to answer the Japanese \'Mogami\' class of 6 inch gun cruisers.
The ARA General Belgrano was acquired by Argentina in 1951 together with her sister ship ARA Nueve de Julio, which was scrapped in 1979. She had an armour belt which varied between 1.5 to 4 inches thick and deck armour of between two and three inches. She was also the last armoured warship afloat in active service at the time.
She also, as you stated correctly, packed 15x6 inch guns! Ick! There\'s my failing eyesight again, Rainer!
The guns were mounted in 5 triple turrets, she also had 8 single 5 inchers, 2 x twin 40mm guns plus quad Sea Cat SAMs. Two helios were also fitted.
To arrive at this figure I had to do a lot of searching - but found a mistake in one of my books which states that she carried 5 x 3 15 inch guns...
Thanks for your comments, Rainer. I also appreciate your pointing out the mistake made, for which I apologise.
