Hi Haken,
The AUD committee recorded this attack as a ‘probable’ U-boat kill, but the information I have from the PRO indicates that it WAS a German submarine that was sunk after Able Seaman Norman Hoffner, the ASDIC operator on ST JOHN, reported a contact at 14.35hrs on what he believed was a submarine, on bearing 245° at 900-yards.
What came up after the depth-charging and Hedgehog attack by HMCS ST JOHN, shows that it was U-boat, even if it was sitting on the seabed and still!!!
The wreck, which is probably that of U 309 and faiely well battered to bits, was first located on 17th May 2001 and dived two months later on 2nd July. She sits in a general depth of 65m, in the Moray Firth, south east of Wick.
Just because a TV company says something, it does not mean that it is always correct and I totally agree with what Johannes has said.
Cheers Ron
