I just saw the show about U309 and on the end they said it's 100% the U309, because it had a gunmount in front of the cunningtower. They said it could't be U1020 because this boat was built later without a gun (88mm).
In my information both boats been VII C subs and even U1020 has been built later it also hat a 88mm gun (at least in the planning). Near the end of the war they gave this guns for better underwaterspeed up.
So I believe the question is still open, even so my info said U309 been sunk by F St John and U1020 been missing in action near Orkney Isl.
