Hi Jean-Noël Muller,
I have no idea if there is a reliable source for this story. I don’t read German so I don’t even know what the story is, I was just commenting on the general unreliably of Wikipedia as a source for U-boat information.
I do know from several years of research that the U-bootwaffe fought an honorable war and that as a result they deserve the benefit of a doubt when it comes to matters of honor.
Any group of men that large is bound to have a few bad guys in it but without doing the necessary research to determine if a specific case of supposed wrongdoing is true or false any rush to judgment is inappropriate – especially when the source is Wikipedia.
What little I could make out from the Wikipedia story seems extremely unlikely to me though – especially if the individual involved was allowed to maintain membership in a U-boat organization after the war. His comrades would have had to have been ignorant of the facts or they would never have had anything to do with him. These were honorable men.
But that said, I have no idea if this particular story is true or false – I just don’t trust the source.
Regards,
Ken Dunn
