<HTML> In a heavy sea, the ship has to keep water flowing against the propellers and rudders in order to maintain control.
The rudders, aft of the propellers, turn the ship by acting against the wake created by the turning screws. If there is no wake created by the propellers, i.e., if the water pushing the ship from behind is more powerful than the force of the propellers pushing the ship forward, the rudders have no force to turn against, and are useless.
\"The Caine Mutiny\" gives an excellent example of this. Although the movie is fictitious, the typhoon mentioned (off the Philippines in 1944) was real, as was the overturning of US warships as a result of the weather.</HTML>
