<HTML>Not being a sailor but having read a LOT of nautical books This is the meaning of your terms
1/. Heave to means to stop,IE ships being ordered to heave to to be boarded for whatever reason.
2/.The best position for a ship to be in -in a storm is to be bow on which will ease the motion of the ship which will be only an up and down motion.
To be broadside on ( sideways to the wave action ) will give a rolling motion AND an up and down motion.(a good way to loose your meal)
Stern on means a greater chance of waves dumping on the stern and maybe causing the ship to sink.
