In Spanish language we call it \"capear el temporal\" or \"ponerse a la capa\",
that means make the necessary arrangements with all available means (engines, sails, ropes,storm anchors, and helm) in order to put the prow-poop line of the ship more or less parallel (10 to 15 degrees) to the direction of the seas (or perpendicular to the waves line).
You can take the waves with the prow or with the poop, depending on your ship´s characteristics/performances.

In a full force gale the ship keeps almost sttopped.
