Re your observations on Mastow, it seems to me like he has a flea up his aris when it comes to Germans. Spielberg does as well, then again, as he is Jewish it's understandable why he is not keen on them (Some of his films smack of propaganda though).
Mastow is under the impression that machine gunning survivors was common practice in the Ubootwaffe. The truth is more prosaic. Only one captain was ever indicted for the practice and shot by firing squad in 1946.
As for the assertion that Das Boot is inaccurate in its portrayal of U boat crews, the words "Pot" and "Kettle" leap to mind. Das Boot director Wolfgang Petersen took great care to ensure every detail was in place and ex U boat personnel were sought for advice. The actual captain of the real U 96, KvKpt Lehmann-Willenbrock visited the set to see how things were going. (See also the Biographies section on this site).
I have yet to see U 571, I don't suppose I will now (though I hear Jon Bon Jovi gets deaded early on in the film, which might be worth seeing!). As has been said elsewhere, Das Boot is the yardstick by which all other sub movies will be judged.</HTML>
