<HTML>Hi there Bystander, missed ya!
You're right, they didn't. My point was they didn't get that far, and that is largely due to the fact that with all its imperfections your constitution has ultimately stopped those type of people grabbing enough power to become that kind of despot. And you have every right to be proud of that.
You used an interesting word a couple of posts back when you said they had 'industrialised' their evil. That's precisely what they did. The US and its values was forged in an era when the transport, communications and technology were not there to do that, but still managed to do a pretty thorough job of wiping out the Native Americans. While I respect the fact that many Americans were prepared to fight a devastating war to end slavery, quite a few were equally prepared to fight for thr right to continue enslaving fellow human beings for economic motives. And my own country (UK) has little to hold its head up over our colonial past.
Bullies get into power because most of the rest of us look the other way instead of speaking out. That happens all over the world. If I'd been living in Nazi Germany in the thirties I would have walked my family past Jews being beaten up in the street. I wouldn't have liked it, but I wouldn't have stuck my neck out. If you are the kind of man who would (and I don't just mean Jews in Germany) then you have my respect. But I know my limitations, and I don't criticise other folk for not being better than me when mainly they have had bad luck and bad history I haven't had.</HTML>
