<HTML>First time i've posted on this forum,so please bear with me.
For anybody interested in WWII or naval warfare,the appeal of Des Boot is impossible to miss.
I think the opening sequence was very insightful.To me it showed the devil might care attitude of young men who know that their lives could be ended in the very near future,so they enjoy themselves while they are still here.
The characters are varied and strong.We have...
The Captain-He has no illusions (he can't afford them),for him there is only the responsibillity for his boat and crew.
Thomson-An interesting character.In the opening scene although newly "knighted" he is very meloncholy about the war.We see him next cheering the u boat out of port.
The No. 1-The brain washed nazi.Straight from the Hitler youth,he's not popular with veterans,even the Captain.
The corospondent-He has the ideals of a man who doesn't know what war really is.
His transition from freshman to veteran is remanicent of All Quiet On The Western Front.
Johann-The old veteran who finally cracks under preasure.It was very touching that the Captain's responce (after things had calmed down),out of everybody why you.
The realism,the tention and the humor make this film a classic.
One of my favorite moments,is when the Captain galles his No. 1 by playing "The Tipperary song".The sailors response "we're the tommies now"is priceless.</HTML>
