<HTML>Hello Stan
I hadn't heard that the crewmen of U-123 had said that. Interesting. I suppose they would know, though I haven't heard of any other uboat men who have voiced that particular criticism.
As I understand it the 'falling around' was quite genuine in the film, as the set was on a gimbel that rocked and shook in a way to (theoretically) emulate the movement of a sub being subject to blast wave attack at depth. How drastically this would affect the vessel I had supposed would depend on the force/proximity of the depth charges. Clearly there would come a point where if the explosive force was too great or close it would inflict unsustainable damage on the boat. I have no idea at which point that would come, (subject to variables perhaps, like which part of the pressure hull took the brunt of the blast) and how much physical movement would manifest itself before the punishment it was taking would result in its destruction.
Would an explosive wave that caused that much violent movement in reality have been severe enough to have destoyed the uboat? I would be interested to know.
