SUBMARINE IN THE U.S. NAVY: A Design and Construction History" by John D.
Alden, CDR USN (RET)? It's available at the U.S. Naval Institute Press for $47.96
plus $5.25 S&H. It's worth every penny!

What I posted earlier was just an excerpt of the remarkable story of a tough boat.

I commissioned USS VON STEUBEN (SSBN-632) and rode her on one gold crew
patrol, and then turned in my chief's hat (after 24) for a hardhat at Newport News
Shipbuilding for 23, involved in building CVNs, 637 and 688-class boats.
