<HTML>The US ran some tests using Tambor in 1940, with a 300 pound tethered charge exploded by remote control at the same depth as the boat. At 500 yards the effect was compared to "slamming a watertight door." A second shot at 340 was noiser, produced a noticeable sideways movement, along with a lot of shaking and vibration. At 275 yards there was minor damage and a fuel oil leak from a tank vent. The final test was at 100 feet, with the crew removed in case fatal damage was produced. Even at that distance there was no hull damage, but there was enough internal damage that the tests were discontinued.

If the shock at 100 feet was sufficient to cause severe leaking through cable glands, open air system joints (cone joints were replaced with silver brazing as a result), and blow out externally mounted air flasks, one has to presume it would make it a bit hard for the crew to stay on their feet. One thing that was discovered was that it was much harder to destroy the hull than previously thought, but that the hatches were a particularly vulnerable area and required better locking devices. Another result of the tests was that it was decided to increase the explosive charge in production depth charges, with the obvious increase in damage potential to the targets.
