<HTML>Dear all,
In my version of Iron Coffins (Cassell Military Paperbacks 1999 edition) there is a photograph showing the stern of a U-boat with the port side, just above the propellor, smashed to pieces. The photograph was taken in dry dock thus proving the U-boat actually made it back to port. The text explains that the damage was caused by a depth charge. Unfortunately there is no mention of the boat number.
These were well-made vessels but the damage a depth charge at close quarters could do was immense, to say nothing about the nerves of the men inside.
On seeing this photograph I was reminded of the comment by Hirschfeld in his book when his boat was going through traiing. A depth charge was set off 100 yards from the U109 and the author described it as the 'dissolution of the universe'. I'm grateful I have never been put through the experience many Allied and Axis sailors had to endure in that war when under attack from surface vessels.</HTML>
