This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>The breakdown happened to the other ERA, Franz, in the book, who is described as surly, and the less reliable and competent of the two. It is a more low key incident too. It is made clear that Der Alte holds 'Johann' in the highest regard, for his steadiness and ability.
Petersen obviously made these changes for dramatic purposes, wanting to keep the deeper character development within the principle members of his cast, to concentrate the dramatic focus. He did similar things with other crew members like Frenssen and Pilgrim.
So I would say Steve is probably right - Hans Johannsen and his family might well have been displeased that such a clearly identifiable, courageous, and highly decorated individual is shown breaking down under pressure.
I never heard that he tried to sue though, assuming he was still living when the film ws released - though I think he might have had sound legal grounds on which to do so. (Would have done in English law anyway.)
