<HTML>Na, that's fine. Let's stay here. With my new company beeing now a complete german one (in accounts and writing) I would like to write here, so that my english does not got worser than now! :-)
Now to your questions:
Buchheim wrote that script in 1977. This is more a less a reaction to the Cohen script which was written for an american production. Major faults of that Cohen script were:
The journey took place in 1943 ( so that amercians can be enemies)
American sailors in a life raft were machinegunned by the boat....
and of course Äktschn, Äktschn, Äktschn....
The Buchheim script was rejected by the german producer because it was too long for a normal movie. As it turned out that due to financing problems the movie turned into the tv-show and the movie was made of parts of the show, no one came back to the Buchheim script (may be becasue it is not an adaption of the book). That's why the movie is nearer to the book than LGB's script.
Buchheim itself described that the book shouldn't be used in 100% for the script. The camera should replace the PK-man (or Buchheim), because he was only used in the book to explain the uboat related facts to the readers.
But Buchheim insisted that the plots which were in the book should also be in the movie because the book was written like a greek tragedy (Hey Io, that's your part). Therefore he was very upset that the Reina Victoria incident did not find a place in the script, because this was were the heroe was beaten by his fate which lead finally to his death ( Now Io, that's REALY your part!).
Th.. th.. th that's all for now. I have started to read the script again, so I can answer your questions.....
BTW: My knowledge about that is based on the picture book from LGB "Der Film Das Boot" You should read it with care, becasue again it is only the point of view from LGB.........
Regards
