<HTML>(In U96, I kept wondering what the guys were going to do with body of the dead Obersteuermann, but Buchheim apparently forgot all about him.)
There were two possibilities. A funeral on sea. Or the other solution described in "Sharks and little fishes" (Haie und kleine Fische)
As I think LGB was not confronted with both of them in reality(whereas the latter is realy an ugly one) and therefore he simply left it for the director to figure out what has become of the Obersteuermann.
(But both possibilities would have given some real "interesting" scenes for the director, especially when they use the knifes and the bucket, yuck!)
Back to the journey. You described it perfectly. No bitterness, no fear, just fun and I realy forgot the different persons until you mentionend it. LGB was realy a sunny character to that time.
Was it only the war which has turned him into that person he is now? At least he had a very "easy" living during war compared to a normal soldier.....
Questions, questions, questions.......
