This is the first submarine movie that I ever remember watching.(NBC Satruday Night at the Movies, early sixties). Although my major field if interest is aviation ,(I work as a pilot) this is when I started getting interested in submarines in general and U-boats in particular. I was 5 or 6. I remember thinking how funny it was that one of the crew was named after a part of anatomy that my mother always threatened, "Do you want a wack on your heini?" I have always liked "the song". It's the only other one I know that has the phrase all the live long day.

It wasn't until a few years back when I discovered uboat.net that I found out what BOLD was, although it worked different in real life than it did in the movie.

In so far as ward robe goes, did you notice the u-boat officers (except the captain) wore sport shirts and slacks and the crew all wore shorts and undershirts?

All in all, I think it's a fine "check your brain at the door and be entertained" film. We could start talking about "Memphis Belle" or "Pearl Harbour" but then we would be here all day. We could all throw a lot of flak at them.

I really enjoy reading everyones posts on the forums. I've learned a lot.
