Dear, Sorry for Gasaway's narrative but U64 did not fire any torpedoes on April 10, 1940 (neither did she see 2 cruisers). See her KTB, both the original German version or the (correctly) translated online version pointed out by Thorsten. KTB U64 explains why U64 did not fire torpedoes at the destroyers. The explosions mentioned were NOT from prematurely exploding torpedoes but from de

Dear Thorsten, No Ulmann was spotted in the Ranglisten. There are 2 officers named Uhlmann (with hl) in the Ranglisten, Siegfried and Ernst. However, both were Verwaltungsoffiziere. The 1944 Rangliste gives Siegfried as Oblt.(V), Ernst as Lt.(V). Verwaltungsoffiziere did not serve aboard U-boats and therefor don't appear in the crewlists for them. The HMA Crewlists (https://hist

Dear Scott, As the officer survived the war, he should have been listed in the Rangliste, but in several editions of the Ranglisten (up to 1944) there is no ULLMANN listed. Might he have been a reserve officer - which aren't listed in the Ranglisten - ? Regards, Walter

The operations record books for Squadrons 206 and 547 are available at TNA (TNA AIR27/1224A/25 & /26 for #206, and AIR27/2034/14 for #547. The information therein deviates somewhat from the above. The confusion might originate with the report from Liberator "C" of Squadron 206 (F/O J.J.Y.Glazebrook). Shortly after 0337 on Feb 4, 1945, the aircraft attacked a 3-island typ

Dear Scott, The only u-boat calling at Martinique was U-156, to seek medical help for a wounded crew member. You can read more about this when entering < Martinique > and < 156 > in the search mask on this website. Check the general discussions for all dates (not just for the last 30 days). This gives a number of hits. No, Martinique never was a u-boat base. Some Allied ships w

Dear Javic, Should you want a book reference, then "The U-Boat war in the Carribbean" by Gaylord T.M.Kelshall (Naval Institute Press, 1994, ISBN 1-55750-452-0) might be of interest to you. Sorry, don't know Spanish literature on the subject. If it is more online you want to do some research, then please let me know. I suppose you are aware of . Best regards, Walter

Dear Roger, Those diesels were not only used in the Type VII WWII2 German uboats, but for instance also in the Type XXI. The MAN M6V 40/60 was a 6-cylinder 4-stroke engine with a cylinder diameter of 400mm and a piston stroke of 460mm (cf. the '40/60' in the name...). The piston displacement or cylinder capacity (Pi*diameter*stroke) was 57,8 litres per cylinder. Sources used:

Dear Larry, As to a list of boats that went missing... In our DUIKBOOT-database (see ) you can in the search mask enter a time period and select for instance the event "sunk, cause unknown" (almost at the bottom of the drop-down menu with events). One can also select as event "Last message/signal from the boat". Both these events are in drop-down menu with events un

Dear Pat, Probably it does not provide all the information (or details) you are looking for, but Luc Braeuer in his books - written in French - about u-boats in French ports (Lorient, Brest, La Pallice, St.Nazaire) has sections in his books with information/photographs/drawings related to the sites where officers and crews remained when not on board. The name of the author suffices to find

Thank you for the link Tony. The airplane in this thread was a passenger carrying Douglas C-54. The aviation-safety.net text says the plane disintegrated and dropped in the jungle some 30 miles east of Paramaribo. It seems most curious to me that a passenger carrying plane would fly so low and near a surfaced uboat (I repeat that to my information no uboat was present in the area on the day

Transfer is to be used for transferring valuable U-boat nucleus crew and shipyard workers." U270 took 30 men
