No records exist as to which chronometer was issued to which German Navy vessel but you are correct in that they were fitted to surface ships as well as u boats. You will need to disclose some more info - is there a letter under the swastika? Is there a letter under the number? What is the number on the reverse? Out of interest, I have a chronometer with the number 15061 which I know as f

According to Axel Niestle only two boats surrendered to the Canadians - U-190 and U-889. 190 (type 1XC/40) surrendered on 14 May 1945 at Bay Bulls. 889 (also a type 1XC/40) surrendered Shelburne on 13 May 1945. I am sure the insignia will confirm which boat - sadly I do not have that reference material.

I have a U-boat clock presented to my late father who took the boat's surrender in May 1945. On the clock face there should be a number with the letter 'N' and the swastika with the letter 'M' underneath. M denotes Marine and N Nordsee. The clocks were 8 day and were manufactured by Kieninger & Obergfell. To my knowledge there are no surviving records as to

Hi Sid, Between 18 August and 4 November 1942 U-459 refuelled U-68/U-159/U-172 and U-504 600 miles south of St. Helena. The correct latitude but still 2000 miles approx. off Rio de Janeiro. Between 19 November 1942 and 3 January 1943 U-461 refuelled out going boats U-126/U-128/U-134/U-159/U-161/U-174/U-176 and returning boats U-154/U-163/U-172 just north of St. Paul's Rocks. As

HMS Conqueror fired three Mark 8 torpedoes at the Belgrano. The design of the Mark 8 dated back to 1925. Two torpedoes hit at an estimated contact speed of 41knots. The first blew off the Belgrano's bow and the second hit aft of the side armour and punched a hole into a rear machine room where it exploded. Despite the bulkheads holding, the loss of electrical power and the inrush of water

You would think this con artist would at least do some homework before attempting to sell the pennant. U-355 is listed as missing around 4 April 1944 in the Artic Sea so immediately there are suspicions. Great that this guy has been exposed on this forum and I trust no members fell for his charm and 'honesty

I have received an unsolicited e-mail from someone in Poland called Pawel offering me, and I quote: "I have an original/genuine pennant from U 355 and I would like to sell it for the reasonable price." U 355 was sunk, with all hands lost, in the Artic on 1 April 1944 so I suspect this is not as original as Pawel thinks or leads us to believe it is. I can only presume that Pawe

Thanks for the info. My point is, if you look at the two eBay photos of these items they appear absolutely identical despite the seller's insistence: "No it is not the same item. It is the same type of medal same sort of tarnishing they tend to tarnish in the same places." Would be buyers be warned ! Check for yourselves: ebay items: 120165048104 and 120141107076

Some officers were transferred from POW camps in the UK to Sennelager, near Paderborn in north Germany and were subsequently released from there. Schaeffer of 977 is but one example.

I would be most grateful if the following passage could be translated from German to English. Grateful thanks

I believe the S13 was an enlarged Chuka Class submarine and was one of 16 boats constructed from 1937 onwards. Displacement: 780 tons Dimensions: 256/21/13 feet Armament: 1x4inch; 1x45mm AA; 6x21inch torpedo tubes Speed: 21knots I have two photos, one taken in 1937 and the other 1944. Let me have your e-mail address and I will scan them and mail to you. Peter
