Good Day Einsamer,
I haven't constructed a model in over 30 years, and the Amati is a challenge
compared to the typical plastic kit. The main area of difficulty is the fitting
of the deck to the hull, and the side plates to the deck/hull. There is a
substantial gap existing between the hull and plates. Also, the plates and
hull are thin brass, so attaching them would be a challenge. My solution,
which I'm in the process of doing, was to put thin plastic sheet on the
wood bulkheads which will support the side plates. This will allow a base
for model putty to stick too, instead of trying to fill a big open space. I've
also added thin plastic to the edgesof the deck for the side plates to butt against
when gluing. I should have this part of the model complete next week
While this part has been challenging, it has been fun. One thing maturity
brings is patience and experience. Once the deck and side plates are
attached, the rest appears straight forward, although to do justice to the
model, scribing detail to the hull and painting/weathering will be important.
New skills to practice before trying them on the model! Bottom line, it
will be a superb model when complete. Also, please see our recent
discussion in the technology section of this forum under U-47, ventilation
duct. Bottom line of that was the central ventilation duct on the Amati model
is not accurate on U-47 at the time of Scapa Flow, and questionable after that.
Anyway, I recommend the kit and will be glad to offer help on the deck fitting.
Regards,
Greg Dorfmeier
